Scrappy Tumbler Flag

The Tumbler Block - versatile and creative.  Use it as a block by itself, or as a shape within a design block.  The tumbler shape is an isosceles trapezoid with one base twice the length of the other. For quilting purposes we must then add the 1/4 inch seam allowance on all sides.  There are many sizes and styles of rulers and tools to accurately and quickly cut tumblers so you can get right to piecing them together.

Scraps:  Red, White, and Blue variations.
18" X 26" Batting of your choice
1/2 yard Backing

Rotary Cutter, Ruler, Cutting Board
2 1/2" Tumbler Ruler

Sewing Machine
  1/4" piecing foot
  Walking foot

Thread: 
   Neutral for piecing 
   Red, White, Blue for quilting

Cut Tumblers:
  25 Blue 
  40 Red
  34 White


Place tumbler shapes in a flag configuration and rearrange until they are how you like them. Beginning at upper left, stack the column together in order for sewing and number stacks 1 through 11.  Stitch each column in the order stacked. Press seam allowances on even numbered columns toward top and odd numbered columns toward bottom.  Arrange columns back in order and stitch columns together.  Press seams all to same side.




Place your batting, backing (right side up), and pieced top (wrong side up) together.  Stitch around, leaving an opening to turn.  Trim to 1/4"and clip valleys, peaks and corners.  Turn, press, and stitch the opening closed.

Quilting:  Echo quilt width of foot away from seams, around each row, using the matching thread color.

1/4 yard of 2 different fabrics.  Yardage or Fat Quarters will work.

3 Buttons (about 1" or your choice)
Interfacing Scraps

Cut:

36 ea. 4" squares  (18 of each fabric)

6 ea. 2" X 4"  (3 of each fabric)

2 ea. 1" X 10" (for facing )

3 interfacing 2" X 4" scraps

TIP**  Lay fabrics right sides together before you make your cuts.  This will save time because all your squares will already be lined up and ready to sew.

Square your fabric and cut into 4" squares.  You will have 40.  Cut 2 pairs in half for your 2"X 4" pieces.  Cut facing pieces from left over edge strip.

Using an accurate 1/4" seam, sew pairs (one of each fabric) together, then sew together 3 pairs in strips of 6 blocks.  Sew 3 strips together in checkerboard fashion. Sew remaining 3 strips together also.

  

Make Buttonhole Tabs.  Place 2"X4"  fabric right sides together with interfacing on one side.  Mark center of one end and 1" down on each side of the same end.  Draw line to make point.  This is your cut line.  Sew around tab at 1/4".  Trim, clip, turn and press.  

Make a buttonhole on each tab to fit your buttons.

Make Facings.   Lay 2  sides out and turn to make checkerboard fashion. Measure from the center seam 4 1/2" and mark a DOT.  Find the center of one of your 10" strips and match it right sides together with the center seam of one side.  Stitch between DOTs and reverse or FIX stitch.  Do not go beyond the DOT.  

Place your button Tabs between marks on the 2nd side.  Center one and place other 2 just inside your mark.  Put 2nd facing strip right sides together on top of the tabs.   Stitch between DOTs and reverse or FIX stitch.  Do not go beyond the DOT.  

Press Facings to back side.  Press so that tabs stick straight out.  Pin the facing ends back so they do not get caught in the stitches of the next step.

Lay 2 sides of project right sides together and on each end stitch from edge to DOT and reverse or FIX stitch.  Do not go beyond the mark.  Smooth facing to back and press.  Top stitch around to hold facing in place.

Decorative Stitching can be added at this point if you like.

Fold square in half, right sides together, and stitch ends from fold to corner.  Take the 2 corners that you just ended your stitching on, and bring them together, forming a new seam from corner to corner of pillow.  Stitch this seam and turn project right side out.  Your Patchwork is now all "on point".

Sew on buttons and cut buttonholes open.
